Thoughts on membership from one of our new members - Frank Graham

Who am I? This or the other?
Am I one person today and tomorrow another?
Am I both at once? – Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 1946
As new members, Carol and I have been discovering the unique and impressive array of people found at 2nd Presbyterian who also hold highly visible, responsible and busy roles in the Richmond community and their careers. That’s started me thinking of the converse: how often I’m surprised to find out someone belongs to this church or that church while in non-church related circumstances. Why should that be a surprise? Isn’t that a key piece of information to know about someone?
We frequently go to great lengths to make others aware of which college we attended (think license plates!) or vacation spots we adore (bumper stickers anyone?). But aren’t the facts we are Christians and belong to 2nd Presbyterian more significant indicators of our being? Why don’t we make those beliefs more visible?
There are few instances I can recall over the years in which I highlighted or began with those two points of identity when providing my background to someone in conversation, or when I was introduced for a speech. Church affiliation was probably never a part of any written biography – including the one on my company website even today! (Look fast, I’ll change it now!).
At Membership Council recently we discussed how to increase awareness for 2nd Presbyterian in the community. Letting others know we belong to 2nd Presbyterian is a great way to start raising that awareness.
